adminI have a confession to make. If you’ve been following my blogs then you know that I am obsessed with Christmas. Like, the decorations go up the very next day after Halloween. True story. But this year I’ve added to my autumn decor and I am really diggin’ the pumpkin and hay and scarecrow look. So much so that in fact, I think I am going to push back my Christmas celebration by a week or two! <gasp> I can’t believe I just said that. But I’m ready to give it a shot. My husband will sure be happy… and my kiddos, too, for that matter! They don’t understand why once the decorations are up, Christmas isn’t right around the corner! I suppose in their little eyes, I am torturing them with excitement and drawing out the whole Santa-is-coming ordeal.
So, yep. It is now the very merry month of November and I still have some fantastic fall-themed crafts happening! Annnnd… my no-carve pumpkins are still standing tall (the plus side to painting the jack-o-lantern instead of really cutting it)! This week my 5 year old decided she wanted to get down and dirty with some paint with me, so we tried out some stamping methods- one new, and one old. We’ve all heard of using toilet paper rolls to stamp and paint with before… right? Don’t feel bad if you haven’t, but yeah, it’s been around. When I heard of someone using LEGOS® to paint with though, woah! A light bulb went off in my head. Why haven’t I thought of that!? And do you know that perfect little circular shaped pattern that Legos® leave behind? Wouldn’t that be perfect for making a painting of INDIAN CORN!?? Ahhh! It just all came together.
I can’t take the credit for these crafts. I saw these fun stamping ideas on CraftyMorning.com and gave it a go. Check out her blog for some other seriously adorable kid-friendly crafts! But in the meantime, this is all you’ll need to get started:
- Toilet paper roll
- Paint
- Lego®
- Scissors
- Brown construction paper
I started by tracing out the shape of a tree. You may not have the time or desire so I have turned this into a printable for you if you’d like to visit here to save a step and download/print out my template.
Then I asked my munchkin to color in the tree trunk. While she did that, I cut a toilet paper roll into 3 sections and bent each one into the shape of a leaf. With those, she dunked one end of each piece into 3 different colored paints (yellow, red, and orange) and stamped leaves all over her tree!
Boom. I think it’s beautiful in it’s own simplistic way!
For the Indian corn, I drew the basic shape of a cob of corn and my little one used a Lego® to stamp dark red, gold, and yellow on it.
It is beyond safe to say that she got extremely excited (and a bit carried away) with the stamping but she was having so much fun! When my little one was done I cut out leaf shapes from brown construction paper and did a fan fold to give them some dimension. Then I cut out the corn and taped the leaves to the back of the cob!
Simple. Easy. Fun. Not too messy. Those are all the things I like!
