Aloha! One of my favorite outdoor activities since we’ve been on the island has been hiking. If you are unsure whether hiking is for you, or if you are new to the island and want to begin exploring all the amazing trails this beautiful, magical place has to offer, the Kolekole trail located here on Schofield Barracks is the perfect beginner hike.
The KoleKole Trail was the first hike I attempted (and conquered!) when I moved here and it was the very first hike I took my kids on, at ages 3 and 6. The picture above is of my children at the top of Kolekole trail and they are looking out at the west side of the island.
The hike is family friendly and it is a short hike at around 1 mile roundtrip. It starts off with stairs and inclines but quickly levels off to a wide, flat path that is great for the littles to run around. When you reach the end you are rewarded with spectacular views of the ocean on the west side of the island and you are surrounded by stunning panoramic mountain range views.
The Kolekole hiking trail will be open this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, February 3-4, from 5:30am-6:30pm. The trail is open to all DOD cardholders and their guests. The gates do get locked promptly at 6:30 p.m., so if you decide to go late in the afternoon just be sure to get back to your car and down the drive by closing time. Also, please keep in mind that the area around the trail is used for training by our soldiers, so it isn’t always open to the public. For any future openings of this trail be sure to like and follow the U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii page on Facebook where they relay all the information regarding this hiking trail. http://www.garrison.hawaii.army.mil/
Hope you all enjoy this hike as much as my family and I do and looking forward to seeing some of you out there this weekend!
