National Hobby Month

National Hobby Month is every January. Coincidence or not, I find the fact that it is the first month of a new year inspiring! Everyone has a hobby or interest, or something they enjoy doing in their leisure time, and what better time to start a new hobby or pick up an old one again, than with a New Year’s resolution! Hobbies come in so many shapes and forms. Reading, crafting, knitting, journaling, even blogging! I have friends who are amazing at photography. Others that are amazing, restaurant quality bakers and cooks. My neighbor can sew like nobody’s business and my husband likes to go running and my boys spend hours and hours building with LEGOS.

For 2016, I chose a hobby that has always been dear to my heart but I admit I let other things take priority over how important it is to me…READING MORE BOOKS! With so much technology and social media in our lives every day, I easily get distracted and instead of using those precious quiet moments I rarely get as a mother to read a book, or an inspiring article, my favorite blogs or even the newspaper, I would get sucked in the vortex that is my phone and before I knew it an hour had passed (darn you Pinterest) and I felt like I had accomplished nothing!

I currently have two stacks of books on my nightstand that remind me every night as I crawl into bed that another day has passed and I didn’t do any reading and it makes me sad.  So my goal this year is to read more. Read more books, read more magazines, read my favorite blogs, and most importantly read more to my kids! To take a step back from the technology overload and pick up a real book!

My kids love to read, and I’m ashamed to say I don’t read to them as much as I would like to but now that I’ve admitted that here in front of y’all, I have to make a change! My 7 year old loves the Magic Treehouse Series. We are almost finished with it and moving onto the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone. I have a fantastic list of books I want to read to them while they are still little and want to actually snuggle with me. So this year I’m going to make that happen! After Harry Potter we will be starting the series The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer.

So I’ll be snuggled up with my quilt in my cozy chair drinking my favorite coffee or tea, out of my favorite coffee mug (that I made thanks to the awesome instructions over at House of Hipsters!) It’s a quick and simple diy and you should head over now to see how to make one for yourself cause no true reading experience is ever fully complete without a hot beverage!

If you’re interested in reading more check out the book club! I know I’m excited to start with “The Light between Oceans: A Novel” by M.L. Stedman. I’ll be heading to the on-post library to pick it up soon!

I <3 reading!! My boys and I do a chapter a night before bed. It helps them to calm down from their day.
