The holiday season is hard for many families. While we have loved ones and friends deployed, it is hard to feel completely whole for many families. We cannot do enough to tell our soldiers thank you, we can show our appreciation! My boys and I love putting care packages together, and sending them off to those that we know who are deployed. However, this year I want to extend a challenge to you! While you are talking to your friends and loved ones, ask them if they know of anyone who does not get a lot of mail.
This happens more than we realize. We do not want any of our soldiers to have those voids, so find a few soldiers that you can send some items to. Put a smile on their face and let them know that even though you do not know them personally, you appreciate them. While I was chatting with a friend of mine from college who is deployed right now, I asked how many people around him needed some happy mail. The number was a bit surprising, but we got down to work. I put the info out to my kids friends in the neighborhood, we got other friends and acquaintances involved, and when you pull all those resources together, it is amazing what you can accomplish.
Whatever you send will be appreciated! We love to help our soldiers remain in good spirits, and this is just one way that you can get involved! Here are some of the items that you can send, which are always needed:
- Beef Jerky, Tuna, other canned meats
- Drink Mixes (singles) that can be added to bottles of water
- Nuts, crackers, individually wrapped items (they last longer this way)
- Hand warmers
- Jolly Ranchers
- Energy Bars, granola bars, etc
- College Ruled Notebooks
- Letters of appreciation – these are musts in any box! We want them to know much we appreciate all their sacrifices
- Stress balls/Fidget Spinners
- Holiday cheer items
It is really a lot of fun to put these boxes together. Everyone loves mail! This time of year, we want to make sure that we take the time to let our troops know that we appreciate them. You can even add these super cute heart pillows from Hearts For Heroes to cushion into the box. Add your own personal message and send a hug along to your favorite military member!
But care packages can be sent to more than just our troops! You know the people around you and in your community. Maybe there are parents who are grieving the loss of a child, college students who are homesick, sick children in hospitals, spouses of deployed troops, older members of your community who are alone, and so many more. All of these packages can be refined for those receiving them, but these boxes are more than just mail to some – they are the reminders that there are people who care about them.
