<p>Lately, I’ve just been trying to do better with what I keep in the house. Nothing dramatic, just small changes that actually make sense for my life right now. Between work, kids, and everything else, I don’t have time to overthink meals or start over every Monday. For me, it’s really been about stocking up on things that are quick, easy, and help me stay on track without making life harder.<br><br>Mornings are always moving, so I need something I can grab and go. I’ve been drinking <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SToK cold brew</a></strong> because it’s already made. I add my <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">French vanilla creamer</a></strong> and keep it pushing. It’s my little moment before the day really gets going. On days when I want to lighten it up, I’ll use <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Silk almond milk</a></strong> instead, and it still tastes good while feeling a little more balanced.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="512" height="640" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-512x640.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-45776" style="width:208px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-512x640.jpg 512w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-240x300.jpg 240w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-768x960.jpg 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-370x463.jpg 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-270x338.jpg 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-570x713.jpg 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6-740x925.jpg 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle6.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px" /></a></figure></div>

<p>Food-wise, I’ve been trying not to skip meals, but I need something quick. <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OIKOS yogurt</a></strong> has been clutch because I can throw in some fruit, and it actually holds me over. <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Starkist Tuna</a></strong> has been just as helpful. I can eat it with crackers and call it a day when I don’t feel like figuring out a full meal.<br></p>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow"><div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-large is-resized"><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" width="512" height="640" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-512x640.png" alt="" class="wp-image-45774" style="width:216px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-512x640.png 512w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-240x300.png 240w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-768x960.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-370x463.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-270x338.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-570x713.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5-740x925.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/StockUp_Lifestyle5.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px" /></a></figure></div></div>

<p>Drinking water is something I’m always trying to do better with, so I’ve been more consistent. <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MiO</a></strong> helps because I can switch up the flavor when I get bored, and it’s even helped my kids drink more water without always reaching for juice.</p>

<p>I’ve also been more mindful about what I’m drinking besides coffee and water, and <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Health-Ade Kombucha</a></strong> is something I’ll grab when I want something different without reaching for soda.</p>

</div>

<p>Some of the other things I keep stocked are just everyday staples that make life easier. <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cottonelle</a></strong> is one that I don’t ever want to run out of. <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bush’s Baked Beans</a></strong> are an easy side, and <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oscar Mayer</a></strong> is a go-to for quick lunches when I need something fast. <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Honey Maid Graham Crackers</a></strong> have been in rotation for snacks because the kids actually eat them, and <strong><a href="https://www.mymilitarysavings.com/brands/deca-stock-up-and-save" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beggin’ Strips</a></strong> are a must for the pup; he hears the bag and comes running every time.<br><br>I’m just trying to be consistent with what works for me. If something is easy and fits into my routine, I’m more likely to stick with it. And honestly, stocking up on the things we actually use has made a bigger difference than I expected. It saves time, cuts down extra trips, and helps me stay on budget without overthinking it.</p>

<p>PCS season can make first-time homebuying feel like a race. You&#8217;re trapped between limited time, competitive listings, and big decisions happening fast. Instead of focusing on just mortgage terms, this guide is built for military families who want a practical game plan. We are covering when to start looking and what to expect with a VA home loan.</p>

<p><strong>The PCS-Season Planning Timeline:</strong><br>First, back-plan from your “keys by” date. Pick your “keys by” target, then work backward. Start with the moment you want to be moved in. Then, reverse engineer your timeline. For example, if you want the keys by early June, then aim to be under contract by mid-end of April. Begin serious touring and ready-to-move offers by March. This means, in February, you&#8217;ll start your prep stage (pre-approval, budget, must-haves, neighborhoods).</p>

<p>Why so early? That&#8217;s because even when everything goes smoothly, the path from offer to closing still includes multiple moving parts. Inspection negotiations, appraisal timing, and lender underwriting can all add time. One delay can push you into the busiest weeks of PCS season. If you want to close by summer, start seriously looking in March, not May. Then, make sure you have a solid team in place to get through this process!</p>

<p>If you can do one thing that lowers stress, it is this: choose people who understand military timelines. Find a realtor familiar with military families and VA transactions. A VA-friendly realtor helps you move quickly without skipping steps. They are used to coordinating video tours, remote paperwork, tight deadlines, and the reality that life can change quickly with orders.</p>

<p><strong>Questions to Ask Your Realtor:</strong><br>1. How many VA closings have you handled recently?<br>2. What appraisal-related issues come up most for VA buyers in this area?<br>3. How do you structure inspection deadlines and repair negotiations when the market is moving fast?<br>4. If we are buying from out of state, what is your plan for walkthroughs and quick decisions?</p>

<p><strong>VA Loan Factors First-Time Buyers Should Know:</strong><br>These are the things most military families ask early, and they can impact your timeline. Look into VA occupancy and options for being able to rent the home later. <strong><a href="https://www.va.gov/housing-assistance/home-loans/loan-types/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VA home loans</a></strong> are designed for primary residences, not investment properties. The big idea is good-faith intent to occupy the home as your main place to live. </p>

<p>A lot of people ask, “How long do I have to wait before I can rent it out?” There is not always one universal “wait this many months” rule. What matters most is that you planned to live there first. If PCS orders or life changes happen later, renting may be possible, but it is smart to talk to your lender early, because lenders can have extra rules on top of VA guidelines. Just remember, buy it to live in it first. If PCS orders change the plan later, confirm options with your lender early.</p>

<p>With a VA loan, you will have a VA appraisal. An appraisal is not the same thing as a home inspection. The appraisal supports the home’s value and checks for baseline safety and livability standards. If something comes up that does not meet those standards, it can turn into a required repair before closing. A home inspection is your deeper look at the home’s condition and systems. Even though it is not always required, it is one of the best ways to protect yourself as a first-time buyer because it helps you understand what you are walking into and what you might need to budget for. The VA appraisal helps you qualify and close. The inspection helps you buy smarter and negotiate with confidence.</p>

<p><strong>More Questions to Ask Your Realtor:</strong><br>1. If we need keys by ___, when should we start touring and offering?<br>2. What is normal here in spring&#8230;for example, days on market, multiple offers, and offer deadlines? <br>3. What contingencies are still realistic right now? <br>4. What issues are common here: drainage, flooding, termites, foundation movement?<br>5. What is the typical age range for roofs and HVAC in this neighborhood?<br>6. If we PCS in 2 to 3 years, does this area rent well?<br>7. What VA appraisal conditions show up most often in this market?<br>8. If repairs are needed, how do you usually negotiate: repairs, credits, or price adjustments?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://www.va.gov/housing-assistance/home-loans/loan-types/" target="_blank"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-640x480.png" alt="" class="wp-image-45402" style="width:463px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-640x480.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-300x225.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-768x576.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-370x278.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-270x203.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-570x428.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-740x555.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3-80x60.png 80w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Untitled-800-x-600-px-3.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>Home Inspection Questions That Actually Help: </strong><br>1. What are the top 3 safety concerns, if any?<br>2. What will likely cost us money in the first year?<br>3. What maintenance should we put on a calendar?<br>4. Where are the shutoffs and how do I use them?<br>5. Is there evidence of past leaks or moisture problems?</p>

<p>Treat the inspection like a lesson, not a pass/fail report. If the report flags expensive items (roof near end of life, aging HVAC), do not panic. The inspection is information. It helps you decide what you can handle, what you want to negotiate, and what you should plan for right away.</p>

<p>Finally, you&#8217;ve reached the home stretch. Insurance is one of the easiest places to accidentally under-prepare, especially during a PCS rush. Do this early. Confirm you understand deductibles (wind, hail, named storm, etc.) Ask what is covered and what might require separate coverage. Store policy docs and a home inventory in shared cloud storage that both spouses can access. For paper versions, store those in a fireproof/waterproof container. Your emergency fund is part of being “insurance-smart,” because not every home issue turns into an insurance claim.</p>

<p>Buying during PCS season does not have to feel like guesswork. Starting early, working with a realtor who understands military life, and knowing how VA loans and inspections work can help you make more confident decisions. The goal is not to do everything perfectly. It is to stay prepared enough that you can move forward with less stress and more clarity. After all the back-planning, paperwork, and decision-making, getting those keys is a big deal. Take a moment to celebrate how far you have come.</p>

<p>Valentine’s Day can be a whole vibe, even if you’re single or spending it solo because your spouse is away on deployment or TDY. Not every Valentine has to be loud, expensive, or planned down to the minute. Sometimes the most meaningful version is the one where you slow down, soften the night, and make your space feel like it belongs to you. That’s exactly what I did.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/49z4ne2" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-640x480.png" alt="" class="wp-image-44717" style="width:459px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-640x480.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-300x225.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-768x576.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-370x278.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-270x203.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-570x428.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-740x555.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8-80x60.png 80w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/8.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure></div>

<p>I spent under $30 grabbing a few things to romanticize the moment in a way that felt cozy and personal. Nothing over the top, just small touches that made the night feel intentional. I picked up three <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/49z4ne2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">face mask</a></strong> options, a sleep eye cover, socks, and a <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/4aX53MW" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">candle</a></strong>. Once I got home, I also used what I already had, like my red coupe glass and some sparkling cider (or whatever floats your boat).</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/3Ld9xoh" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-640x480.png" alt="" class="wp-image-44718" style="width:462px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-640x480.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-300x225.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-768x576.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-370x278.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-270x203.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-570x428.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-740x555.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10-80x60.png 80w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/10.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure></div>

<p>I made it cute by decorating my table the way I like it. Not “perfect,” not staged for anyone else, just pretty enough to make me pause and enjoy being in my own space. I lit the candle, poured my drink into the coupe glass because that instantly elevates the experience, and sat down with a book. No background noise, no constant scrolling, just silence. That quiet part was the whole reset.</p>

<p>After I had my calm moment, I picked a <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/49z4ne2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">face mask</a></strong> and let that be the transition into full cozy mode. I love having multiple options because sometimes your skin wants hydration, sometimes it wants glow, and sometimes you just want to feel like you did something nice for yourself. I didn’t overthink it. I chose one, got comfortable, and let it do what it came to do.</p>

<p>For dinner, I made myself a bowl of pasta. Comfort food is self-care in my book, and I wasn’t interested in turning the night into a complicated cooking project. It was warm, simple, filling, and exactly what I wanted. To close the night out the right way, I got on the couch and binge watched Bridgerton. Blanket on, candle still burning, snack energy if you want it, and zero guilt. It was soft, cozy, and honestly the perfect end to a day that can sometimes feel heavy if you’re alone or missing your person.</p>

<p>Here’s what I want you to take from this…you don’t need a big budget to make Valentine’s Day feel special. You can do it with small details. A <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/4aX53MW" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">candle</a></strong>, a <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/49z4ne2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">face mask</a></strong>, a <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/3Ld9xoh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cute glass</a></strong>, a quiet moment, a comfort meal, and a show you love will do. The goal isn’t to impress anyone; the goal is to create a moment that feels good to you.</p>

<p>If your spouse is away right now, you’re allowed to hold it down and still give yourself softness. If you’re single, you’re allowed to romance your own life without needing a reason. Either way, you deserve a night that feels warm and intentional.</p>

<p>February hits different for us. Our wedding anniversary falls the same week as Valentine’s Day, and travel has become our way of slowing down and reconnecting when military life allows it. When time together is limited, we look for <strong><a href="https://www.kqzyfj.com/click-101433503-11552045?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trips</a></strong> that feel intentional, meaningful, and realistic on a military/retiree budget.</p>

<p>If you’re planning a February escape, these three destinations deliver romance, culture, and unforgettable memories, many of them completely free.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://www.kqzyfj.com/click-101433503-11552045?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2F" target="_blank"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-640x480.png" alt="" class="wp-image-44456" style="width:459px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-640x480.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-300x225.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-768x576.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-370x278.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-270x203.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-570x428.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-740x555.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4-80x60.png 80w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-4.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>Puerto Rico</strong>: <strong>Tropical, Adventurous, and Passport-Fre</strong>e</p>

<p>Puerto Rico is an ideal February destination for military couples who want warmth and adventure without the stress of international travel. While there, my husband and I explored El Yunque National Forest, ATV’d through the rainforest, and swam in the cool natural waters. It was one of those experiences that pulls you fully into the moment and reminds you how good it feels to step outside of routine. In Old San Juan, we shopped, walked cobblestone streets, and studied the historic culture and architecture that tell stories of resilience and history. February weather is sunny and comfortable, flights are often affordable, and no passport is required, making this destination especially military friendly.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://www.kqzyfj.com/click-101433503-11552045?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2F" target="_blank"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-640x480.png" alt="" class="wp-image-44461" style="width:460px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-640x480.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-300x225.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-768x576.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-370x278.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-270x203.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-570x428.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-740x555.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1-80x60.png 80w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Untitled-design-1-1.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>New York City</strong>: <strong>Cold Weather, Cozy Love, and Free Experiences</strong></p>

<p>We traveled to New York in February, and it quickly became one of our favorite trips. Winter slows the city down and makes it feel intimate. We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, grabbed classic hot dogs, and walked through Central Park bundled up together. We rode bicycles over the Brooklyn Bridge, explored DUMBO for dope photos, and admired the stunning architecture inside Grand Central Terminal. So many of the best moments were completely free. February hotel rates and flights are often lower, making this a surprisingly affordable anniversary or Valentine’s trip.</p>

<p><strong> New Orleans</strong>: <strong>Romance, Culture, and Mardi Gras Magic</strong></p>

<p>February in New Orleans is electric. Mardi Gras season brings music, color, and celebration, and you don’t have to spend much to enjoy it. Couples can walk the French Quarter, listen to live street jazz, explore historic neighborhoods, and admire the architecture around Jackson Square. Parades, people-watching, and spontaneous moments fill the days, while boutique hotels and local food spots help keep costs reasonable. New Orleans proves that romance doesn’t have to be quiet. It can be joyful, cultural, and full of soul.</p>

<p><strong>These destinations make sense for military life because they offer:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Easy Logistics</strong> &#8211; Straightforward travel and minimal planning stress when leave days are limited.</li>

<li><strong>Flexible Budgets</strong> &#8211; Options for modest hotels, short stays, and flights that don’t require premium pricing to feel special.</li>

<li><strong>Plenty of Free or Low-Cost Experiences</strong> &#8211; Museums, architecture, parks, parades, culture, and nature are where the best moments don’t come with a price tag.</li>

<li><strong>Memories That Feel Intentional, Not Rushed</strong> &#8211; Space to slow down, reconnect, and be present together instead of chasing expensive activities.</li>
</ul>

<p>Military couples understand that love is built in the moments in between. Leave days, quiet walks, and shared adventures. Sometimes love looks like rainforest trails and natural waters, sometimes it’s snowy city streets and warm food, and sometimes it’s music in the air and beads flying past. Wherever February takes you, choose the place that lets you pause, reconnect, and celebrate choosing each other again.</p>

<p>When the air turns crisp and the evenings start to feel a little quieter, that’s when my boys and I know it’s time for one of our favorite family traditions, we call s’mores night. It’s something I started years ago while still in the military as a way to bring a sense of normalcy and comfort to our home between all the moves, transitions, and time apart. Now that I’m retired, it has become our official way to welcome the holiday season with slow evenings, warm laughter, and the smell of toasted marshmallows drifting through the air. Every year, we set up right in front of the fireplace with mugs of hot chocolate in hand and a spread that’s just as fun to build as it is to eat. I like to lay everything out charcuterie style with graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate squares of every kind.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/4sph3Nk" target="_blank"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-640x480.png" alt="" class="wp-image-43942" style="width:459px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-640x480.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-300x225.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-768x576.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-370x278.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-270x203.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-570x428.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-740x555.png 740w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1-80x60.png 80w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/1-1.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure></div>

<p>If you don’t have a charcuterie board, no worries, just pull out a cookie sheet and place everything neatly on top. If you don’t have a fireplace, don’t let that stop you. They make tabletop mini <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/4sph3Nk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fire pits</a></strong> small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. They’re the perfect way to bring the cozy campfire vibes indoors. Take your experience over the top with a cup of Hot Chocolate. </p>

<p>Over the years we’ve gotten creative with our s’mores lineup, from Reese’s peanut butter cups and classic Hershey’s milk chocolate to white chocolate bars and even Lorna Doone shortbread or Biscoff cookies. Sometimes we mix in pretzel sticks for a salty crunch or fresh strawberries for an extra treat.</p>

<p>It’s amazing how something so simple, a few sweet ingredients and some family time, can fill a home with so much warmth. What started as a way to create stability for my kids during my service years has turned into one of our most treasured family rituals. Every melted marshmallow and chocolatey grin reminds me that sometimes the best traditions are the ones that remind us what home truly feels like. </p>

<p>Thanksgiving is a holiday that holds a special place in my heart for some good soul food cooking, with recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. My momma&#8217;s sweet potato pie recipe is one that was a hit at every unit holiday party and FRG function. I have spent over ten years putting my own special touch to it, but there is nothing like the smell of it that grounds me back to my childhood. The smell of butter, cinnamon, sweet potatoes, and vanilla extract has become my call sign to my kiddos that there&#8217;s a whole lot of love brewing in the kitchen. If you ever wanted a Southern style pie that tastes like comfort and tradition, this is it.</p>

<p><strong>Directions:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Preheat the oven to 350°F.</li>

<li>Place the sweet potatoes in a large pan and layer chopped butter on top.</li>

<li>Add a small amount of water to the bottom of the pan to prevent sticking.</li>

<li>Sprinkle about 2 cups of sugar evenly over the potatoes.</li>

<li>Cook on medium-high heat for 15–20 minutes.</li>

<li>Add vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg; stir gently to blend.</li>

<li>After 10 minutes, taste and add a bit more sugar if needed.</li>

<li>Continue cooking another 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are soft and syrupy.</li>

<li><strong>Secret Step:</strong> Toward the end of cooking, sprinkle brown sugar on top and let it melt into a glossy caramel glaze.</li>

<li>Transfer the cooked potatoes to a large mixing bowl.</li>

<li>Add condensed milk and eggs; stir until smooth and creamy.</li>

<li>Pour the mixture evenly into 4 pre-crusted pie pans.</li>

<li>Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the pies are set and slightly golden.</li>

<li>Cool before slicing and enjoy that brown-sugar-sweet magic in every bite!</li>
</ul>

<p>The backpacks are packed. The lunchboxes are labeled. The school year is in full swing and if you’re anything like me, you’re still trying to catch your breath.</p>

<p>Whether you&#8217;re an active-duty mom, military spouse, or just grinding it out day-to-day while juggling work, schedules, and sanity this season can feel like a whirlwind. Somewhere between drop-off lines and dinner duty, it’s easy to lose yourself in the shuffle.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s the thing, sis: <strong>You still matter.</strong></p>

<p>Not just as a mom, not just as a partner, but you. Fall is the perfect time to fall back into yourself.</p>

<p><strong>Here are some budget-friendly (and totally doable) ways to hit reset and reconnect with your own magic this season</strong>:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong> Morning Moments: Reclaim the First 15</strong> &#8211; Before the house wakes up take 15 minutes for you. Sip your coffee in silence, journal your thoughts, stretch, or step outside and just breathe. Don’t scroll. Don’t answer emails. Just be. It costs nothing but can change your entire day.</li>

<li><strong>Find Your Corner (Literally)</strong> &#8211; Carve out a small, cozy space just for yourself a corner with a chair, a candle, a blanket, or even a cute little tray with affirmations and snacks. You don’t need a whole room. You just need a spot that whispers “this is my time.&#8221;</li>

<li><strong>Fall Walks Hit Different</strong> &#8211; Take a 20-minute walk solo or with your stroller crew. Military base or neighborhood, doesn’t matter. Let the crisp air and crunchy leaves remind you that seasons change and so can your mood.</li>

<li><strong>Girl, Romanticize It</strong> &#8211; Light that candle. Use the good mug. Play your favorite playlist while folding laundry. Throw on a gloss and hoops just to pick up groceries. It’s not extra&#8230;it’s a vibe. You deserve to feel like you even in the chaos.</li>

<li><strong>Don’t Underestimate a Power Reset</strong> &#8211; A shower with eucalyptus spray. A fresh pair of PJs. A 10-minute deep clean of one corner of your home. These things are free and bring instant peace. Make them part of your weekly routine.</li>

<li><strong>Talk It Out With Your People</strong> &#8211; Schedule a coffee date (even if it’s virtual) with a friend who gets it. Fellow moms, fellow spouses, fellow service members we need each other. And venting with someone who understands hits like therapy… without the co-pay.</li>

<li>B<strong>udget-Friendly Joy Boosters</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Here are a few small wins that cost next to nothing:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A solo trip to a favorite store with no agenda</li>

<li>Reading a book outside after bedtime</li>

<li>A YouTube yoga session</li>

<li>Doing your skincare routine with intention</li>

<li>Trying a new <strong><a href="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/take-a-break-let-your-slow-cooker-do-all-of-the-work/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crock-pot recipe</a></strong> while blasting old-school R&amp;B</li>

<li>Making a mini charcuterie board from whatever’s in your fridge just for you</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Tap into Your Mom Community (Yes, Even If You’re Shy)</strong> &#8211; Making mom friends as an adult can feel like dating… but with more spit-up and scheduling conflicts. Still, your community is your lifeline especially in the military world, where moves and transitions can make you feel isolated fast. Start small. Smile at the mom in the pickup line. Chat up another parent at your kid’s game. Join a Facebook group for your base or neighborhood. Say yes to that playdate invite even if your house is a mess. It’s not about building a whole village overnight. It’s about finding <em>one</em> person who gets it. Who won’t judge your messy bun or your microwave meals. Who will text back when you say, “I’m drowning a little today.”</li>

<p>The truth is, we’re all figuring it out and showing up for each other is one of the most underrated forms of <strong><a href="https://mymilitarylifestyle.com/index.php/2024/11/25/simple-ways-to-practice-self-care/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">self-care</a></strong> out there.</p>

<p>So whether you&#8217;re holding down the fort on base, managing chaos in the carpool line, or typing reports on your lunch break know this: you can pour into yourself without emptying your wallet.</p>
