September just hits different, doesn’t it? The kids are back in school, Target aisles are screaming “fall,” and suddenly we’re all trying to remember what routine even feels like. For military families, like mine, this season isn’t just about new notebooks and picture day outfits. It’s about finding some kind of balance after a summer that probably looked like PCS boxes, family road trips, late nights, and a whole lot of “go with the flow.”

When those buses roll up, it’s not just the kids adjusting. It’s us too. New duty station? New school? New friends? Whew. Some of us are explaining again why Dad or Mom can’t make “Meet the Teacher” night because duty called. Others are helping our kids navigate being “the new kid” (again). All the while, we’re just trying to keep up with lunch packing and alarm clocks that feel way too early.

Here’s the thing: September is like a reset button. It’s our chance to breathe, to create new rhythms, and maybe even reclaim some “me time.” Routines don’t have to be perfect to work; they just need to make life a little smoother.

A few hacks I swear by:

Set up a family “command center”: A calendar, meal plan, backpack drop zone. Total game-changer.

Guard your family time: Even something simple like Friday night pizza makes kids feel grounded. Carve out something consistent your kids can look forward to each week.

Say yes to community: Get out there, meet other parents, find your tribe. Don’t be afraid to join the PTA, sign up for base activities, or just introduce yourself to other parents. Building connections makes every transition smoother.

Prioritize Mental Health: New schedules can be overwhelming. Make time for rest and check in with your kids emotionally.

Military life may be unpredictable, but September reminds us we can always find balance again. Back-to-school isn’t just for the kids; it’s our fresh start too.

I know all too well that back-to-school season means supply lists, first-day outfits, and of course the dreaded front porch photo. For military families like us, it can also mean unpacking moving boxes, learning the new school drop-off route, and making sure everyone remembers the new ZIP code.

Whether you’ve just arrived at a new duty station or you’re a seasoned pro, here are a few ways to make back-to-school feel a little smoother.

1. Create a Sense of Familiarity
Kids thrive on routine, but moving can absolutely throw that off. Bring some familiar items for their desk or backpack. Something like a favorite lunchbox, a special water bottle, or favorite snacks.

2. Connect with the School Early
As soon as you know your new address, reach out to the school. Ask about meet-the-teacher days, orientation events, and any military family liaisons or student ambassadors who can help your child settle in faster. JOIN THE PTA… Trust me!

3. Build in Transition Time
If possible, avoid overscheduling the first couple of weeks. Give your child time after school to decompress.

5. Celebrate the Milestones
New school? New friends? Celebrate it. These moments remind kids that change can be exciting, and that they have the skills to adapt.

Military families know better than most that flexibility, community, and a positive attitude can turn any new beginning into a success story. Here’s to a school year full of growth, friendships, and maybe a little less chaos!

Juneteenth stands as a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of African Americans. For Black military families, this day resonates deeply, intertwining personal narratives of service, sacrifice, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. Amidst today’s complex political landscape, Juneteenth offers a moment to reflect, unite, and celebrate the rich tapestry of Black history and culture.

Honoring Dual Legacies

Serving in the military as a Black family carries a profound duality. On one hand, there’s immense pride in upholding a legacy of service that dates back to the Buffalo Soldiers and the Tuskegee Airmen. On the other hand, there’s an acute awareness of the systemic challenges that persist within and beyond the armed forces. Juneteenth encapsulates this duality—a celebration of emancipation and a reminder of the work still ahead.

Celebrating Amidst Challenges

In the face of political polarization and debates over historical narratives, Juneteenth emerges as a beacon of unity and education. It’s a day that transcends politics, focusing instead on shared history and collective progress. For military families like mine, it reinforces the values of honor, duty, and the relentless pursuit of justice.

Finding and Participating in Local Juneteenth Events

We’ve found that engaging in community celebrations can be both enriching and affirming. Here are some general ways to discover Juneteenth events in your area, like we did:

Community Centers and Libraries: These institutions often host or have information on local Juneteenth events, including lectures, performances, and exhibitions.

Local News Outlets and Event Calendars: Newspapers, radio stations, and community bulletin boards frequently list upcoming events and celebrations.

Social media and Online Platforms: Websites like Eventbrite and Facebook Events allow you to search for Juneteenth activities by location.

Military Base Community Boards: Many military installations organize or promote Juneteenth events for service members and their families.

Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth as a Family

Beyond attending events, you can also consider these meaningful activities:

Educational Activities: Read books or watch documentaries about Juneteenth and Black history with your family.

Support Black-Owned Businesses: Use this day to patronize local Black entrepreneurs, from restaurants to retail stores.

Family Discussions: Engage in conversations about the significance of Juneteenth, sharing personal reflections and aspirations for the future.

Volunteer Together: Participate in community service projects that honor the spirit of Juneteenth by giving back.

However you choose to celebrate, as a Black military family, your journey embodies strength, resilience, and commitment. Juneteenth is not just a historical milestone; it’s a living testament to the progress achieved and the path forward. By celebrating this day, you honor your heritage, inspire future generations, and reaffirm the ideals of freedom and equality that are the bedrock of both the nation and the military.

Let this Juneteenth be a celebration of how far we’ve come and a reminder of the collective strides still to be made. Your story is integral to the American narrative—one of courage, perseverance, and unwavering hope.

Stationed somewhere with no base in sight? You’re not alone. Here’s how I learned to thrive during recruiting duty in a city with no built-in military community—and how you can too.

Listen, when my husband received recruiting orders to Miami a few months ago, I expected a typical military experience—base housing, built-in community, and all the comforts of life on base. Instead, I found myself in a bustling civilian city with no base for hours! To my surprise, there were no familiar places like the Commissary or Exchange, no military neighbors, no spouse groups and no welcome orientation. At first, it felt isolating—like we were living two separate lives: military during the day, civilian at night.

Adjusting to this new norm wasn’t just about logistics—it was emotional. I missed the unspoken bond that comes with being surrounded by other military families who just get it. There were moments I felt completely disconnected and unsure of where to turn for support. However, like most military spouses, I’ve learned that if you can’t find community, you create it.

So, that’s what I did! I joined a few local Facebook groups for South Florida moms and made some new girlfriends…there is a Whatsapp group for EVERYTHING here…lol. I also connected with other spouses at the nearest base, even though it was hours away. Church became a big part of our lives, giving us structure and new friendships. I started saying “yes” more—yes to coffee meetups, trying new restaurants, and conversations with strangers that’s leading to something more.

Then, we embraced the adventure. Miami may not have a base, but it definitely has personality. We discovered a new rhythm through beach days, street festivals, and trying foods from around the world. Our kids got to explore a city full of culture and life. It was different, but in the best possible way.

Even without a base, we stay grounded in the military lifestyle. Whether it’s through virtual spouse groups, joining United Way, volunteering in the veteran community, or simply sharing our journey online, we’re still connected. In fact, sharing this experience has helped me connect with other spouses who feel like they’re in the same boat—on duty, but off base.

3 Tips for Spouses Navigating Life Without a Base:

Be proactive about connection. Don’t wait for a community—create one. Start with local groups, school events, or faith-based gatherings.

Explore your surroundings. Treat your new city like an adventure. Try local restaurants, find parks, and create new family traditions.

Stay plugged into military life. Join virtual spouse networks, celebrate military milestones, and don’t be afraid to reach out to others living a similar experience.

Recruiting duty may not come with the traditional comforts of military life, but it’s taught us how to create home wherever we are. To be honest, the most unexpected duty stations can become the ones that shape us the most.
