Gobble Gobble – Cocoa Krispie Turkey Legs!

It’s almost time to GOBBLE GOBBLE til ya WOBBLE WOBBLE!  We are counting down the days and becoming more and more excited for the next big holiday – THANKSGIVING! – and all of the family that will be coming into town to celebrate it with us. So how do we pass the time until one of our favorite times of the year?? With silly projects and snacks like these Cocoa Krispie Turkey Legs, of course!!

I mean, come on, do these scream “Turkey Day”  to you or what? My mother was a bit turned off by it and wasn’t able to associate a sweet treat with a turkey leg, but my kiddos and every student in my daughter’s Pre-K class (whom we ended up sharing these with!) thought these were THE COOLEST! They were eaten in true pre-schooler fashion, with marshmallow strings hanging from lips and sticky fingers, as I imagine pilgrims may have been digging into their huge feasts without napkins. These were so fun to make and everyone really enjoyed them. It’s a little twist on the classic Rice Krispie® Treat because it’s made with Cocoa Krispies®!! Yum!!

These are the goodies you’ll need to create these for yourself:

  •  Kellogg’s® Cocoa Krispies®, 8 cups
  •  Pretzel braids or rods (not the thin pretzel sticks), 24
  •  Mini marshmallows, 2 bags
  •  White chocolate chips or white candy melts, 1/2 bag
  •  1/4 cup butter

*This recipe makes 24 adorable Cocoa Krispie Turkey Legs*

Step 1) Melt a small bowl of white chocolate chips or candy melts and dip the very end of each pretzel rod into the melted chocolate and attach 2 mini marshmallows to the end. Set on wax paper to harden for a few minutes.

2

As I was doing this, I realized that melted white chocolate chips has more of a yellow tint to it. If you’d like a bright white look, I would stick with using candy melts. That being said, you may not like the look of the white mini marshmallows next to the yellow melted chocolate either, if that’s what you choose to use. However, yellow mini marshmallows (from the fruit flavored assorted packs) looks great with the yellow melted chocolate chips. Does that make sense? But I guarantee either way that these are going to be awesome!!

Step 2) After the marshmallows harden onto the ends of each pretzel, melt another small bowl of white chocolate chips and you’re going to add a bit to where the marshmallows join the pretzel. This is just to make sure the marshmallows don’t fall off and… you can never have too much chocolate, right?

4

Step 3) In a large microwaveable bowl, melt the butter and then add an entire bag of mini marshmallows to it and toss to coat. Microwave again in 30 second increments, stirring often, until marshmallows are melted. Then add 8 cups of Cocoa Krispies® and gently stir well. Let this mixture cool for a bit because you cannot mold the shape of a turkey leg with warm ooey gooey Krispie Treats. I ended up spreading the Cocoa Krispies® into a large 9″ x 13″ pan to allow to cool quickly, and I stuck it in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Then I scooped up a small handful and molded it around each pretzel rod to look like a turkey leg. Spraying your hands with cooking spray will help make this easy and less messy 🙂

Step 4) Set aside and let completely harden. Then serve! The pretzels will become soggy by the next day so I recommend eating them fresh however, they will still be scrumptious.
