Light Between Oceans – Week 1

Tom Sherbourne has survived the Great War, but now is onto a new a job working for the Lighthouses. Being alone on the Janus Rock Lighthouse has its advantages. Growing up his life was not easy. His mom was thrown out of the house by his father, and both his father and brother acted as though she had never existed. The freedom that the army brought for him was exhilarating, but after it was over, the silence was comforting. Then, when he get the emergency posting at Janus Rock, he met Isabel, and everything changed.  She completely turns his life upside down, and the more he spends time with her, the more he is drawn in by her. She embraces the unexpected, and although she is almost ten years younger than him, Isabel has determined that she is going to marry him. After some talking, letter exchanges and asking her to think about it, he begins to make plans as well. After all, one cannot be alone forever, and he loves the chaos that Isabel has brought into his life.

As they begin their lives together in the Lighthouse on Janus Rock, they are optimistic about their futures and the children that are bound to come along. But one miscarriage after another, Isabel is still mourning the losses of her children. But then by chance, a miracle happens, one that is bound to change their lives. A boat arrives at the island, with a dead body and a small baby. There is nothing they can do for the adult, but Isabel latches onto the baby, and convinces her husband to not write the incident into the log book. He agrees to hold off for one night, but is determined to report the incident the following morning. But Isabel has other plans…

This week we are reading Chapters 1-9

Questions:

  1. Tom is very reluctant to talk about his past to anyone, but Isabel keeps pushing. Why is he so determined to keep his past quiet?
  2. Isabel is saddened by the loss of her children, so when one washes up in a boat on the shore, she sees it as a miracle. What should they have done?
