<p>When you have a mortgage, car loan, or other consumer loan, you pay the loan off over a set period of time and this is called <strong><a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/amortization.asp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amortization</a></strong>.  Amortization is derived from the Latin word meaning “to kill”, so the word implies you pay on the loan until you kill it off. Each monthly debt payment includes a portion that goes to interest and a portion that goes to the principal, or remaining balance of the loan. Typically, each successive payment applies more money to the principal and less money to the interest as the loan balance decreases.</p>

<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/refinance.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1080" height="1080" src="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing.png" alt="" class="wp-image-39114" style="width:458px;height:auto" srcset="https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing.png 1080w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-300x300.png 300w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-640x640.png 640w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-150x150.png 150w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-768x768.png 768w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-370x370.png 370w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-270x270.png 270w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-570x570.png 570w, https://blog.mymilitarysavings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Refinancing-740x740.png 740w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/refinance.asp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Refinancing</a></strong> a loan is a way to take advantage of a lower interest rate or to consolidate multiple loans into one. Be sure to account for any charges or fees imposed by the lender when considering refinancing a loan. These fees may lessen the impact of a lower interest rate.</p>
