Something that can be a bit tricky, especially as a new military spouse, is making sure you know where to park when on a military installation.

Most buildings will have standard disabled parking spots that follow the same standard rules and regulations for parking in the civilian world. However, many times, you will find additional parking spaces (by stand-up sign or by signage on the parking block) that are meant for specific military members. Usually these signs are for higher ranking members, which may be shown as a rank level parking spot (E-9, 0-6, General, etc.) They may also show a level of leadership just outside of specific buildings as well (CO, CC, CCF, etc.). So, make sure to watch where you park!

You definitely don’t want to be parking in places where you don’t belong. While, there may not be fines associated with these military spots, there could be base privileges revoked, and the military member that is the sponsor of the driver will be held responsible, no matter what!

So, make sure that you are parking where you belong! It can be confusing though, but I almost always followed the rule of thumb that if I saw any sort of signage, it probably wasn’t for me!

However, there was actually this ONE time where I was a DV for the day! I was part of the panel for the AMC Commander’s Course about the Key Spouse Program (fun fact…I was an AMC Key Spouse of the Year…before big Air Force had their own award). This was my specialty parking space tag! They let me keep it! Other than that particular day, I park in the regular spots like everyone else!
