From PCS to PTA: Military Family Tips for a Smooth Back-to-School Season

I know all too well that back-to-school season means supply lists, first-day outfits, and of course the dreaded front porch photo. For military families like us, it can also mean unpacking moving boxes, learning the new school drop-off route, and making sure everyone remembers the new ZIP code.

Whether you’ve just arrived at a new duty station or you’re a seasoned pro, here are a few ways to make back-to-school feel a little smoother.

1. Create a Sense of Familiarity
Kids thrive on routine, but moving can absolutely throw that off. Bring some familiar items for their desk or backpack. Something like a favorite lunchbox, a special water bottle, or favorite snacks.

2. Connect with the School Early
As soon as you know your new address, reach out to the school. Ask about meet-the-teacher days, orientation events, and any military family liaisons or student ambassadors who can help your child settle in faster. JOIN THE PTA… Trust me!

3. Build in Transition Time
If possible, avoid overscheduling the first couple of weeks. Give your child time after school to decompress.

5. Celebrate the Milestones
New school? New friends? Celebrate it. These moments remind kids that change can be exciting, and that they have the skills to adapt.

Military families know better than most that flexibility, community, and a positive attitude can turn any new beginning into a success story. Here’s to a school year full of growth, friendships, and maybe a little less chaos!
