Any time is a great time to promote good oral health habits, and to stress the importance of regular dentist visits for children. Taking care of your teeth is very important and it should start when you are young. There are many things we can do to encourage healthy habits in our kids.
Here are a few easy things you can do to start your kids on the right path:
1. Brush twice a day: Brushing your teeth is very important and children should be encouraged to brush at least twice a day. My son’s dentist says “Brush at night to keep your teeth and brush in the morning to keep your friends!” I thought that was a clever way to encourage kids to brush! Then, for smaller infants, gently wipe a damp cloth over their gums to clean bacteria after each feeding.
2. Floss regularly: Bacteria and decay can get stuck in between your teeth, especially in spaces the toothbrush can’t reach. Include flossing in your kids daily routine for even better oral health. Begin flossing as soon as their teeth start touching.
3. Healthy eating habits: Vary your kids snacks by adding options that are low on sugar, this includes their favorite juices and drinks. Some healthy snack options are strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, celery, carrots, string cheese and yogurt.
By the way, did you know that the month of February is National Children’s Dental Health Month? Well, now you do!
