September 29th is celebrated as VFW Day. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is the nation’s oldest veterans service organization dedicated to supporting all of America’s veterans by educating separating service members about their earned VA benefits, advocating for veterans on Capitol Hill to ensure promises made to veterans by our government are kept, financially assisting military members struggling with the hardships of war, and delivering morale-boosting “welcome home” events for military members returning from combat operations.
About 1.5 million members enjoy meeting with other service members and vets at over 5,600 VFW Posts worldwide. The VFW and Auxiliary sponsor academic scholarships to service members and veterans and monetary awards and other incentives to middle and high school students through patriotic essay competitions. Members take part in service projects, patriotic events, and other commemorations to honor the sacrifices made by our military members.
VFW membership is open to honorably discharged veterans and current military members who have served in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or hostile waters. If you are not eligible for the VFW but have a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, sibling, or spouse who would be eligible, you are eligible to join the VFW Auxiliary.
