Making Halloween a Little More Pet-Friendly

I’m definitely one of those people who gets just as excited about seeing the dogs out on Halloween as I do the costumes. You know the ones, the little hot dog walking down the sidewalk or the golden retriever in a superhero cape. The dog who has absolutely no idea why they are wearing a pumpkin on their head but is just happy to be included.

This Halloween, I decided that if a four-legged trick-or-treater shows up at my door, they are getting something too. Along with my usual bowl of candy, I am keeping a separate little stash of Merrick Lil’ Plates ready for the pups who come trick-or-treating with their families.

Imagine walking up to the door, saying “trick or treat,” getting some candy tossed into your bucket, and then hearing, “Wait! Is that your dog?” That’s when I’m grabbing a Lil’ Plate. As a dog owner, I personally would love hearing this. Truthfully, I’ll probably need to take a photo too. 

I’ll drop it into their human’s bag or bucket so they can take it home and decide when to serve it. It is their dog’s own little Halloween takeaway. If I were trick-or-treating and someone gave me something for my dog too…that house would immediately be my favorite every year to stop at, I’d make a mental note for sure. 

What’s my setup like?

I’m keeping it pretty simple: one bowl for the human trick-or-treaters and another little Halloween basket with Merrick Lil’ Plates for the furry ones. I may even add a little sign that says: “Trick-or-treating with your pup? They get a treat too!”

Of course, the Merrick goodies will stay packaged and go home with the pet parent rather than being opened or served at the door. That way, they can check everything themselves and decide what works best for their dog, because we all know in today’s world we always check the candy too…just in case!

Think about it, if you are handing out treats this year, consider keeping a little something by the door for the neighborhood pups too. A few Merrick Lil’ Plates, a Halloween basket, and suddenly, your house might become the most popular stop on the block.
