Since 2007, National Pet Insurance Month has been celebrated in September. It is a great time to look at the healthcare plan you have for your pets and adjust or upgrade it. What’s that? You don’t have a healthcare plan for your pets? It’s okay, you are not alone. Here’s how to create one and what to look for as you do…
There are over 175 million pets just in North America and only 1.5 million of those dogs, cats, birds, and so on, are insured with a pet policy. Pet policies are designed to protect owners and pets against costs from issues such as disease, illness, and accidents such being hit by a car or an unprovoked attack from another animal.
Make sure the company you choose will tailor your policy to the species and breed of your pet. Large breed dogs like Great Danes have a number of health issues not common to small breeds like Terriers and certain species of birds are more susceptible to molting diseases than others. Before you purchase your policy, make certain your veterinarian will accept it. Just like human doctors, not all vets take every insurance.
Pet Insurance is important, but it is not the only part of your beloved pet’s healthcare plan. Here are two suggestions:
- Take a Pet First Aid Class – There are such classes, and they can be tailored to one type of pet such as a dog or provide general information such resuscitation for many species. Most are given through a veterinarian’s office, so check with yours today. You can also take one through a pet store or a local animal shelter.
- Save for Your Pet’s Health – Even the best insurance does not cover everything. Also, if you miss work due to vet appointments or healthcare treatments, it’s good to have a few days or weeks of income saved up so you can concentrate on your pet’s recovery without worrying about keeping the lights on.
So go out and celebrate National Pet Insurance Month by getting a policy to cover your furry, feathered, or scaly family members. They deserve it for all they give to you, and so do you to keep caring for them the best way possible.
