Is everyone excited about Thanksgiving? Goodness it will be here before we know it. I used to think that the holiday season began on Thanksgiving, now I would say it’s the “holiday season” starts on November 1st. Halloween is over and it’s time to start giving thanks and get busy with the Christmas shopping. This week I wanted to make a fun turkey that the boys would enjoy. My big helped me with this week’s craft and he was a great model.
This week’s craft you can actually make the base and change up the options for your very own or use different mediums. I’ll note the options during each step.
Supplies
- 1 paper plate (or two if you want to make it sturdier)
- Scissors (I used a cool pattern shear)
- Different colored sheets of Construction paper
- Glue (we used hot glue for it to hold better)
- Felt (or construction paper for head)
- Yarn
- Googly eyes
- Plastic Egg
- Pipe cleaners (if you decide to make legs)
I am on a paper plate kick now. They are so versatile, easy to use and great to have just hanging around the house for emergencies. You know, the night you decide to just have pizza or sandwiches and you don’t want to wash dishes afterwards.. You get me.
We started off by cutting the feathers. An easy way to cut multiples at the same time is putting all the pages together and cutting as one. You can see in the collage below. Grab your plates and if you want to do double plates go ahead and glue the plates together. This way it’s much sturdier. Once the glue has dried pre-arrange your feathers on the plate to see what it’s going to look like. Cut out an oval shape from the felt. If you want to have your child cut trace the shape out for them. Or have them trace a shape out first then cut. Either way, it’s going to be awesome and they will be so proud! Go ahead and glue down the feathers and then add the felt head/body onto the feathers. Super cute! We got so excited to see it like this. Almost done.
You can then decide, if the brown will be the whole face or you want to make it a full body. It’s your craft, your choice. We decided to make it a hat. Remember this craft from last year?
I actually keep all of my crafts and reused the little face for the hat! But I added the snood! You know the red fleshy thing hanging from the beak. I had no idea it was called a snood. You can totally add a waddle too! We decide not too.
Cut the bottom of the plate like we did to open up the bottom of the turkey for the face. Add a ring of construction paper to the back and reinforce it with yarn so you can tie it on versus just set on the head. See below! Pretty cool right?! And it’ll fit various sized heads! Yay!
I can’t wait to see what you create! Make sure to share with us by tagging us on Twitter or Facebook and using the hash tag #MMSCraft!
Happy Crafting!
