Back-to-School Budgeting During Drill Season

At My Military Savings, we’re always looking to help military families make the most of their hard-earned money. If you’re anything like me, back-to-school season somehow sneaks up on you every single year. One minute you’re buying popsicles and sunscreen. The next you’re standing in the school supply aisle trying to figure out why your child suddenly needs seventeen folders, four composition notebooks, two packs of crayons, and a very specific color of dry erase marker. 

Add drill weekends, military obligations, and the normal chaos of family life, and it can feel like your bank account is being attacked from every direction. The good news? A little planning goes a long way. 

Shop Your House First

• Before you spend a dime, take a look around your home. Seriously. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to buy school supplies only to discover enough pencils, notebooks, and folders hidden throughout the house to stock a small classroom. 
• Check backpacks, kitchen junk drawers, closets, and that random bin where all school supplies seem to disappear during summer break. 
• Every item you can reuse is money you get to keep in your pocket. 

Make a Plan Before You Walk Into the Store

• Walking into a store without a list during back-to-school season is a dangerous game.  You go in for glue sticks. You leave with throw pillows, snacks, three clearance shirts, and somehow still forget the glue sticks. 
• Before you shop, make a list of what your family actually needs. 
• Think about: 
  • School supplies
  • Shoes
  • Clothing
  • Activity fees
  • Lunch supplies
  • Sports equipment
  • Technology needs
• Having a plan keeps you focused and helps prevent those “How did I spend $300?” moments at checkout. 

Use Drill Pay Intentionally

• For many Guard and Reserve families, drill pay can be a helpful tool during expensive seasons. 
• Instead of letting that paycheck disappear into everyday expenses, consider setting aside a portion specifically for back-to-school costs. 
• Even covering supplies, shoes, or activity fees can take some pressure off your regular monthly budget. 

Start Early If You Can

• Nothing drives up stress like realizing school starts next week and half the shopping list is still unfinished. 
• Buying a few items at a time throughout the summer can make a huge difference. 
• It spreads out expenses, gives you time to find deals, and helps avoid the last-minute scramble we all swear we’re not going to repeat this year…yet somehow always do. 

Don’t Forget About Military Discounts

• Military discounts may not seem like much on a single purchase, but they add up. 
• Before checking out, take a moment to ask if a military discount is available. 
• Many retailers offer discounts year-round, and some run additional promotions during back-to-school season. 
• A few dollars here and there may not seem significant, but when you’re buying for multiple children, every bit helps. 

The School Supply List Isn’t the Whole Story

• Parents know the truth. The school supply list is just the beginning. 
• A few weeks into the school year, you’ll likely see: 
  • Field trip forms
  • Club fees
  • Fundraisers
  • Classroom projects
  • Team registrations
  • Spirit week expenses
• It’s practically a rite of passage. 
• If possible, set aside a small buffer for those inevitable surprises. Future you will be grateful. 

Give Yourself Some Grace

• Back-to-school season can create a lot of pressure. 
• Social media makes it look like everyone else’s kids have perfectly organized supplies, color-coordinated lunchboxes, and matching first-day-of-school outfits. 
• Meanwhile, you’re just hoping nobody loses their backpack during the first week…and that’s okay. 

At the end of the day, your children aren’t going to remember whether they had the trendiest notebook or the newest backpack.  They’re going to remember feeling supported. They’re going to remember the excitement of a new school year.  They’re going to remember that you showed up and made it work. 

That’s what military families do. We adapt. We improvise. We figure it out.  Somehow, every year, we get those kids back to school.
