My life is never in a “schedule” anymore. We have routines, that for the most part, get carried out to complete perfection. Some days I have so much to do, I do not even know where to begin. Other days I feel like I could binge on Netflix movies. On the days that I don’t have much to do besides take the kids and dog on a walk or bake in the sun at the park, I often wonder what kind of hobbies I could pick up. What kind of hobbies are out there, for not so adventurists like me, other than the traditional sewing, reading, collecting rocks, hiking, making wreaths and cooking.
Hobbies like cooking and sewing I already do those while being a stay at home mom. Why do I want to slave over a hot stove any longer than I have to? Nothing against the food bloggers…you all bring inspiration to my taste buds, but trying to entertain a two year old while focusing on my newest cuisine creation is not in my book of fun right now. I could pick up bird watching, but I surely don’t have the attention span for all that. I would absolutely LOVE to start gardening, but we haven’t been established in a place long enough for me to even dig a hole in the ground and call it mine. I could even pick up being a wino…but let’s be real with two kids!
While my mind wondered of all the endless possibilities of what hobby I could pick up, I decided to investigate what all was really out there. I bet you never heard of some of these hobbies: Spinning yarn, geocaching, fish keeping, coffee roasting, pole dancing, mustache growing, meat smoking, hog catching, memory improvement, dragon collecting or maple-ing.
The websites for men had me cracking up! Things like MANTELLIGENCE…”All The Manly Intelligence You Could Ever Need” and “Art Of Manliness” popped up. They are such catchy titles you can’t help but smile and laugh. I just love The Art of Manliness logo!
For men there seem to be some really cool hobbies. Some of those hobbies are truly a lost art. There are people that do them, but they aren’t the most popular hobbies among today’s men.
Metal working, ship in a bottle, whittling, leather working, wood burning, journaling, blacksmithing and alcohol/cigar/pipe smoking connoisseur (I don’t know if I would consider this a lost art).
The more popular hobbies for men would be:
Hiking, distilling and home brewing, golf, grilling, cycling, car restoration, backpacking, fishing, marksmen and shooting, motorcycling, darts, gaming, sports, martial arts, exercising, playing guitar and rock climbing.
Now for women there are a lot out of hobbies out there. Just like men, the hobbies women used to enjoy are some what lost.
Sewing, quilting, crocheting and knitting, embroidery by hand, flower arranging, butter making, card games such as Bridge and tea time.
More of the popular hobbies for today’s women would be:
Yoga, exercising, cycling, photography, couponing, blogging, candle, lotion and soap making, dancing, group classes, cooking, learning new instruments, wine tasting, scrap-booking and gardening.
Things like sewing, antiquing, restoring old furniture and crafting are really starting to make a comeback in this day in age. The truth is you can really turn anything into a hobby. My brother cracks me up because he changes hobbies like he changes underpants. It’s always a good laugh hearing my sister-in-law tell us about the new hobby he picked up and how much money he spent!
With all of these hobbies, new and old, it really makes me think and appreciate all there really is to enjoy and all the different ways to spend a little free time. Will I start back a classic lady like tradition, such as looming my own garments from hand spun thread? No, probably not. But will I try and be a little more open-minded and tolerant to try something new (or old). I think I might.
