Sunshine & SPF: Protecting You and Your Pup This Summer

Summer adventures hit different when the sun’s shining, the waves are calling, and your dog is prancing beside you, tail high. But before you both soak up those rays, don’t forget one summer essential: sun protection for you and your pup. I’ve learned my lesson, and unfortunately my dog Zero too, especially since he is white.

Yep, Dogs Can Get Sunburned!

Dogs can get burned if they’ve got light fur, pink skin, or thin coats. My dog’s a sunshine lover and had cancer twice now, so we don’t leave the house without protection. I use Coola’s mineral sunscreen stick on his nose and ears, and their body lotion for his body…and when we’re out for longer hikes or beach days, he rocks a sun shirt and a little hat! (Yes, he’s absolutely adorable in it!)

My Surf Day Go-To:

Living all around the world, I’ve come to learn many different climates, but California’s taught me the most. Personally, when I’m heading out to surf, and I know I’ll be out there much longer than normal, I throw on a rash guard with built-in sun protection, and Zero chills on the beach under an umbrella with a frozen treat and freshly applied sunscreen.

Sunscreen Tips for Humans & Dogs:

  • Use pet-safe sunscreen (avoid zinc oxide unless it’s vet-approved for dogs).
  • Reapply every few hours, especially after swimming.
  • Cover what you can with clothing—sun shirts, rash guards, and shade go a long way.
  • Hydrate and avoid peak heat times.

We have made SPF part of our summer ritual and you should to—because adventures are more fun when you’re not dealing with burns or hot spots later. A little sun, surf, and a safe pup by my side? That’s a perfect day for me!
