Red Velvet Hot Cocoa

Oh my goodness, October has FLOWN by! It’s already the last Happy Hour Cafe of the month! How is that possible? That also means it’s almost time for Halloween. Yay! Today, I decided to whip up a warm and comforting drink with a fun Halloween twist. This drink is great for kids and adults alike!

Red Velvet Hot Cocoa

  • 4 cups whole milk (you can use 2% or skim, but whole tastes much better!)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 12 ounces chocolate chips. You know I always go for the special dark from Hershey’s
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring
  • Smirnoff Whipped Cream Vodka (or another flavor that goes well with chocolate!)
  • Whipped topping or marshmallows, optional

Heat the milk and sugar on the stove until the sugar is dissolved and the milk is steaming. You don’t want it to boil and scald, so once you get lots of little steamy bubbles around the edge of the pot, it’s hot enough! Take it off the heat and add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract. Whisk until melted. Now, you could stop there, but where’s the fun in that?

Add enough red food coloring to get your desired Halloween color. For the adults, add a shot of vodka into your hot cocoa. For the children, top with whipped topping or marshmallows!

How fun is that?! I love the red velvety color of the hot cocoa. It’s perfect after a fun night of trick-or-treating. Enjoy a cup with your friends around a bonfire this Halloween night!
