Family is coming into town and I’m always concerned with 3 things: where they will sleep, what they will eat, and what we will do to keep busy. Who can relate!? Thankfully we have a lot of extra space in our home at this particular duty station so sleeping arrangements are easy and being that this is one of the most festive times of year, there are plenty of holiday events to make everyone happy. So that leaves me with the food predicament! What comfort foods can you prepare a huge batch of, that is sure to please everyone?? I am still pondering that, because I need a weeks worth of meal ideas to pull this family gathering off without a hitch. BUT I can share with you the ONE meal that very first came to my mind without hardly any thought at all!…
A sure-fire dish to satisfy everyone in this chilly weather is a good, homemade pot of CHILI!! It’s easy to fancy up based on personal preferences with sour cream, onions, cheese, bacon, and different veggies. But the best, I mean the absolute best, chili recipe I’ve ever tried is my family’s “secret” chili – that is about to no longer be secret! It would be a sin to keep something so delicious all to ourselves! (Don’t worry, I have gotten “permission” to share this recipe with YOU!) Is a hot bowl of chili on your menu for this week? If it’s not – add it now! And jot down these things on your grocery list:
- 1 pound lean ground turkey
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 can (15 1/2 oz.) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 can (15 oz.) no-salt-added tomato sauce
- 1 can (14 1/2 oz.) diced tomatoes
- 1 cup Kellogg’s® All-Bran® Complete® Wheat Flakes cereal
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves or dried oregano leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Did you see that secret, key ingredient listed above?? All-Bran® Complete® cereal!! Who woulda thought!!? Sometimes I also add in 1 ounce of unsweetened chocolate!! Trust me, guys!
Step 1) In large saucepan COOK turkey, onion and bell pepper over medium heat until turkey is no longer pink, stirring to break up big pieces. Drain off any fat.
Step 2) STIR in remaining ingredients. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Ladle into bowls.
You can have this deliciousness on the table in 30 minutes and it serves 6. It’s also a great recipe to double, which is exactly what I’ll be doing for my family. Serve with a side of cornbread and you are all set!! Yum yumm YUM!
