Vegan On A Budget: Spicy Hummus

I find Hummus to be the best vegan chip & veggie dip. Its easy to make, and rich in taste. Even people who give it an “ewww” look end up loving it.

Wikipedia says  “Hummus is a Levantine food dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahiniolive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Today, it is popular throughout the Middle East (including Turkey), North Africa (including Morocco), and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe.”

Here is what you will need:
  • 2 -14 ounce cans chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans), drained
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 4  jalapeno peppers, deseeded & fresh is best
  • 4 cloves garlic (this can be optional if you are not a garlic person)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro

Put everything except the cilantro in a food processor or a blender works too. Mix until its all smooth & don’t be shy to add extra liquid if you need to. It should be smooth & creamy textured.

Then add the cilantro in and done!

If you don’t like garlic, don’t worry. You really can’t go wrong making your own hummus since its really just mashed beans made however you want. I prefer the spicy red hummus over others. Go all out and try olive hummus too!

The cost of this should be around $5 taking into account that you may already have some of this in the kitchen. Chickpeas can be maybe $1 a can!
