RebeccaKit has come from Barbados to find her family. But before she even reaches their house, she is learning that things are not as simple as they were in Barbados. As they are moving down the river to their location in Wethersfield, she shocks everyone by diving into the water to rescue a small doll for the young girl on board. But as she begins to learn what she should and should not do, she is more and more confused. As she begins to talk to one of the passengers on board, she gets a realization of exactly what she is looking at. Apparently only witches float in water, and she has drawn some attention to herself. Kit knows that she must be careful in the future.
When she gets to her Aunt and Uncles home, she is again taken aback. The stark comparison of what she has been used to, compared to the dreary surroundings are only compounded further when her uncle seems to be against everything she is. Her clothes, her views, and more. Since she did not tell them she was coming, she took the entire family by surprise. Her cousins seem pleased to see her, but their courtesy wanes a bit when they discover that she has trouble with even the most simple tasks that they give her. Mercy seems to be the only one who does not take out their frustration on her. She is thankful for the help with the carding and having someone to talk to as they work through their chores.
When meeting day rolls around, Kit and her Uncle have a differing of opinion. Her clothing is improper, and he is upset with her for not having anything more suitable. She knows that she had no idea what she was getting herself into when she set sail for Connecticut. Kit is doing what she can to fit into the family, but it is proving harder than she thought!
