Did you know that June 18th is International Picnic Day? The origins are unknown, however it is celebrated around the world. This is a day to get out of the house and enjoy a nice picnic at a park or recreation area. Don’t worry though, you can go out in the backyard if that’s more convenient…just make your way outdoors.
A typical picnic includes sandwiches, fruit and side dishes but you can be as fancy or casual as you like. If you’d like to be a little fancy some staples like cheese, olives and wine are great. If you are looking for a more casual approach some great options are fruit like strawberries, pineapples and grapes. Some easy side dishes are potato salad and fruit salad. Finger foods like crackers, pretzels, nuts and trail mix are easy to transport and don’t forget to pack and drink lots of water in the warm weather. Grab your picnic basket and fill it up with your favorites!
While sandwiches are popular as a main course I personally prefer pinwheels. Luckily, I’ve found a great Ham and Turkey Club Pinwheels recipe from Stephanie over at Eat Drink Love that’s easy to make and I’m just sure you’ll love it, too.
The best thing about picnics is that when it comes to your food choices the possibilities are endless. Mark your calendar so you don’t miss International Picnic Day on June 18th and be sure to stock up on the essentials at your local Commissary!
