Original ‘Nilla Banana Pudding!

Ya’ll I made custard from scratch for the first time for this foodie Friday and it came out perfect!!! This is a tried and true dish, banana pudding but my husband went on a hunt of recipes for me for this week and came across this one. I was a bit scared, not having made custard myself from scratch but heck, why not! It came out beautifully!!! I don’t know if I can go back to pre made custard now! Check out the recipe below, it’s alot simpler than it looks and perfect for your holiday table!

ORIGINAL ‘NILLA BANANA PUDDING

What you need:

  • 3/4 cup of sugar, divided
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 dash salt
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 2 cups milk
  • 45 Nabisco Vanilla Wafers
  • 5 rip bananas, sliced

What to do

  • Mix 1/2 cup sugar, flour and salt in top of a double boiler
  • Blend in 3 egg yolks and milk
  • cook, uncovered over boiling water for about 10-12 minutes or until thick. stir constantly
  • Remove from heat and add vanilla
  • Reserve 10 wafers for garnish
  • Spread small amount of custard on bottom of a 1 1/2 qt baking dish
  • layer up! wafters, banana, custard, wafers banana, custard until you have 3 layers ending in custard
  • beat eggs whites on high until soft peaks form
  • gradually add in remaining 1/4 cup sugar until stiff bu tnot dry
  • spook over the custard and spread evenly sealing well to the edge
  • bake 350 for 15-20 minutes or lightly browned
  • cool slightly or refrigerate several hours until chilled
  • top with reserved wafers before serving and garnish with banana slices

Viola! Chef! You have made your very own custard into an epic banana pudding 🙂
