Edmund has betrayed his siblings. He has told the witch where she might find them. Now as they rush through the cold night, he finds himself wishing he was back with his siblings. Peter, Susan and Lucy are on their way to the Stone Table to meet with Aslan. The Beavers are leading the children as quickly as they can to avoid the spies from the witch as much as possible.
While they are resting in a small hole, there is a visitor to the land of Narnia, one that has not been allowed to visit for quite some time. Father Christmas has returned to the land. He brings gifts for the children, but these are not toys, they are gifts that must be used when the time is right. Peter gets a sword and shield, Susan gets a bow with arrows and a small horn to use if she needs help, and Lucy gets a small dagger and an elixir that will heal anyone who is injured. While there is a hope that they might never have to be used, they know that in order to get the witch under control, there will be a fight.
When they finally arrive at the spot where Aslan and others have gathered, they are amazed at how many are there, but they are also worried about their brother. Aslan sends a small group after the boy, and in the meantime, the children are fed, and rested while they wait for word on Edmund. When they awake the next morning, they find that their brother has returned and is in the middle of talking to Aslan. When they return not a word of what happened is spoken, but they are thankful to be all back together again. The Witch however is not satisfied. She demands the return of Edmund as a traitor, as they are hers by right. Instead of handing over the young boy, Aslan and the Witch walk away to talk in private. When they return, a bargain has been struck, but the terms are not released to the crowd. Instead, while out walking late that night, Lucy and Susan see Aslan steal away from the area where they have camped. While they follow for a while, he soon finds that they are there, and he makes them promise that they will stay where he tells them to, and not follow any closer. The girls agree, and walk with Aslan back to the area of the Stone Table where the Witch and her followers are waiting.
This week we are reading Chapters 10-14
Questions:
- Do you think Mrs. Beaver had good foresight to take some food and supplies with them as they began their way toward Aslan?
- What would you have said to your sibling if they had done wrong to you? Would you have just been able to drop it?
- Aslan made a huge sacrifice to keep the children safe. Could you make a decision like that, if it would save others?
