Treats for our Heroes!

Fourth of July is coming up, and most of us are looking forward to a day off. But while I was talking to my boys the other day, they asked if police officers and firefighters got the day off. I said no. My youngest said, “well, what do they eat then, could we take them some dessert?” I was all for that! I love being able to do little things for our law enforcement. Since we have our own emergency services here on post we do what we can, especially around holidays. During Thanksgivings, my boys and I loaded up a bunch of meals in small containers so that each person could have their own, and then dropped them off with some pies, cookies and soft drinks to go with it. I want to get my boys involved as much as possible, and getting their help is vital! Keep those little hands busy and out of trouble!

So off to the commissary we went, and the first thing that caught their eye were the Pillsbury Stars & Stripes cake mixes. Just perfect for the Fourth of July!! Patriotic, delicious, and so pretty to look at! However, they are also EASY to make! While kids have the view that adults get to do whatever they want, whenever they want, we all know that there are quite a few jobs to accomplish each day.

So here is what you will need:

  • 2 boxes of Pillsbury Stars and Stripes Cake Mix
  • Eggs, Water, Oil as called for on the back of the box
  • Your favorite frosting – I used Betty Crocker Cream Cheese
  • Red, White and Blue Sprinkles (optional)

Directions:

  • Mix as directed
  • Make cupcakes
  • Decorate with Red, White, and Blue sprinkles (optional)

These are quick and fast to put together, and approved by the entire family, including the dog (she managed to snag one when I set it on the counter to cool). After I piped on the frosting, I gave the boys the sprinkles and let them go to town. I suggest using a cookie sheet under the cupcakes to grab the excess that falls off, as then you can just empty into the trash for faster clean up.  Voila! You have delicious treats to drop off to your local heroes who are ever vigilant!
