Good evening readers, it is time to jump into our next read! I hope you enjoy reading through this charming tale, as I have been enthralled with it! I have not touched this book in over 20 years, but I can remember bits and pieces. The spin that the author is able to put on this family is amazing, and the little tidbits of wisdom that are included as well! I wish you many hours of happy reading as we move through the winters and summers that take place in this delight!
*************************************************************************************
The four March sisters have such wonderful times together. As we move through the years of the Civil War, we get to see a bit of their lives, and how they perceived everything. The author makes mention through the first chapters of the book on the fortune that they lost trying to help a family friend. While the older girls can remember better times, the younger sisters don’t remember it quite as well.
Meg and Jo both have jobs outside the home that they go to each day. Meg, is a governess for a family and Jo helps out their Aunt who needs a companion. As they grumble through some of the chores, they are pleased that they can help out a bit around the home, especially while their father is away. Their father is serving as a chaplain for the army, and as they think about the sacrifices that others are making they determine to do better. But they are determined to get to know the young man next door and his grandfather, and slowly the doors begin to open for the family. As friendship increases so does their happiness.
With four sisters, there is bound to be some disagreements and minor explosions. Amy gets mad at Jo when she is not allowed to accompany them to the theater. In retaliation, Amy burns the book that Jo has been painstakingly working on. Jo refuses to forgive her for what she has done, and it is not until an accident occurs which could have been much worse does she realize that forgiveness is key. There is however, more to this story than meets the eye…
This week we are reading Chapters 1-11
Questions:
- The memories of wealth gone by is something that Meg and Jo remember more than the other sisters. How do you think this affects their lives as they move through the jobs that they are holding?
- Meg is invited to a party, where the girls insist on dressing her up one night. Laurie does not like the change in her, and she is not sure she likes it either. Why do you think she behaved the way she did?
- Jo is a firebrand when it comes to her temper. How do you think working with her Aunt will affect her temper and mold her as she grows older?
- Which one of the five March women do you identify with the most, and why?
