Witch of Blackbird Pond – Week 3

With the ending of the Dame school, Kit is back to all the regular chores that she was doing. She still meets Prudence at Hannah’s house so that she can teach her to read and write. As the summer wears on and the preparations for winter begins, Kit is not sure what she is going to expect. She has never seen snow before.

But it is not just the snow that people are waiting for. With the coming of the new governor and the murmuring of people against the coming changes, there seems to be a charge in the air, and not just from the changing seasons. Meanwhile, William is still calling on Kit, and she is very conflicted when it comes to her feelings. She still feels as though she is in the way at her Aunt and Uncle’s home, and needing to do something to get out and on her own again. While she is on her way home from Hannah’s one afternoon, she runs into John Holbrook. As they are talking, he tells her of his interest in Mercy. Kit is excited for them, but then remembers that Judith has decided that she was going to marry John. Kit hopes that he can do something soon, to show his intentions toward Mercy.  But in a moment of confusion, Judith thinks that he is there to call on her, and poor John is stuck, unable to tell the truth.

When a detachment forms from the small town, John decides to go along as a doctor. Judith is outraged that he would agree to do such a thing, much less volunteer for it.  But things are fixing to change for the small town..

This week we are reading Chapters 12-16

Questions:

  1. Do you think Kit is doing everything she can to be a useful part of the family?
  2. Kit is still teaching Prudence to read and write in secret. Do you think this is a good idea?
  3. William thinks that Kit is going to marry him, what do you think is holding her back?
