Our Military Life Blog

Being a book nerd is NOT a bad thing!

Every body has a little bit of nerd in them, whether you want to admit it or not. We all have our certain items that we can ‘geek out’ or ‘nerd’ over. Books just happen to be mine. If I am anywhere near a bookstore, I can sense it, and I HAVE to visit, even if I don’t buy anything… (haha yeah right, I am no quitter. I will haul those books for miles). I mean how many people can say NO to books!?

Right now, I am on vacation, and nothing makes me happier than my sister saying “there is a bookstore an hour from here, and its amazing!” Well of course, I am going to have to visit! Who can pass up an amazing bookstore, especially when they have fantastic prices!? I have to build my collection, or at least get all the books in a series that I have fallen in love with, so I can read them whenever I want.

There are some books that I love more than others. We all have our favorites. I love a good mystery, historical fiction, military history, and the occasional scary you so silly you cant sleep book. But not everyone likes the same ones, and that is okay! My boys are completely wrapped up in Bad Kitty books and anything Davy Crockett. It makes it easier to find them something to read, but at the same time, I try and move them outside their comfort zones a little bit.

But back to being a book nerd. Book nerds are great people to hold a conversation with. They can have witty remarks, give you new book titles to try out, and completely understand when you go through the “end of book withdrawal.” That last one there, is one of the worst feelings you can experience. You get so wrapped up in the characters and their lives, that when the book ends, you really feel as though you need to shed a couple of tears. My husband does not understand how one can get so wrapped up in a book, but some people do understand, and they can commiserate with you as you work through all the emotions that one book can entertain.

Here are a few ways to tell if you are a book nerd or not:

  1. You are friends with your favorite authors on FaceBook or you follow them on Twitter.
  2. You can list every book in a series that has been written, in order of publication and release date.
  3. You can relate to characters in a book better than you can relate to people in real life.
  4. You know all your favorite characters birthdays, shortcomings, who hates who and so forth..
  5. You cry when someone you have become attached to is written out of a story.
  6. You develop a slight crush on a character who has been dead over 400 years (soooo guilty of this one).
  7. You worry whether the weight of your books will exceed your weight limit on your next PCS, but you cannot bring yourself to part with any of them, so you get rid of clothes instead.
  8. When you begin looking at new places to live, you have to place where the bookcases will go before you plan for any other piece of furniture in the house.
  9. When you are forced to downsize your books, you have to hold each one to determine its sentimental value before deciding if you can part with it or not.
  10. You begin to hoard books in places where you spouse MIGHT not find them… (under the bathroom counter is a good place to start, or the pantry)
  11. You stand in line (alone) to be the first one in a bookstore when the next book comes out in a series that you are reading, because you cannot wait for the price to drop to figure out what happens next.
  12. When holding a house warming party or attending one, you bring books because nothing else in the house is as important.
  13. You have a “book book” where you log all your books, pages read, and list the authors, so you can track your reading for the year and compare to past years.
  14. You have apps on your phone or computer to check which books you already have and which ones you still need, so you don’t buy duplicates and can give people accurate lists for future gifts.

How many of these apply to you!? Are you a true book nerd?
